DWM Doubles the Fun on Earth Day

Charlotte-area listeners of public radio station WFAE-FM were treated to an hour-long call-in show about waste management and recycling on Earth Day. The Division of Waste Management’s Paul Crissman and Jim Hickman, from the Division of Pollution Protection and Environmental Assistance, joined host Mike Collins for “Charlotte Talks,” which airs 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. Mondays through Fridays with a rebroadcast each evening at 7 p.m.

For one hour, Paul and Jim answered questions posed by listeners via call-in or e-mail. Host Mike Collins had a number of questions as well. The station was pleased with the event, so another show on this or another waste-related topic may be scheduled soon.Youngsters vie for a chance to use DWM's groundwater model.

Later that same day, DWM’s environmental education team rolled up their sleeves for a hands-on groundwater demonstration at Raleigh’s Cameron Village library.

From 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., the Superfund section’s Shirley Liggins and solid waste section’s Pam Moore joined team leader Dawn Briggs as she taught a group of mostly children about non-point source pollution.  TV station WLFL aired a story on the event during that evening’s 10 o’clock broadcast.DWM's Dawn Briggs demonstrates non-point source pollution with a groundwater model.

Two days after Earth Day, three Division of Waste Management employees were invited to IBM’s North Raleigh location. The company’s "Take Your Kids to Work Day", which ran from 10:00 a.m. through 3:00 p.m. was a great success.

Ryan Gay, Melanie Bryson and Purnima Kotiya, all from the division’s environmental education team, used a groundwater model and 20 cups with sponges to demonstrate how soil and groundwater can become polluted and then cleaned up. Close to 100 people attended the event. The kids loved the cup and sponge exercise the best, probably because they got to use spray bottles!
