Working in partnership with the Division of Waste Management’s Superfund section, two Marine Corps Bases, Camp
Lejeune and Cherry Point, received the Secretary of the Navy’s Environmental Restoration Award. Rick Raines, manager
of Camp Lejeune’s Installation Restoration Section, described the award as, “A big deal to the base and although it will be
the base accepting the award, we won it due to the hard work and cooperation between the USMC and NC Superfund.
The Installation Restoration team at Camp Lejeune is cleaning groundwater contamination from past industrial activity that
occurred on the base. Camp Lejeune has also signed more agreements with the government regarding environmental
contamination than any other military installation. Cherry Point received a runner-up award (there are no second and third
place awards) for its work cleaning the groundwater at two old landfills and a site where chemicals were used to clean
aircraft parts. Site investigation continues at both bases to determine the presence of and design treatment plans for other
contaminated site.
