2002 Secretary of the Navy Environmental Award
Working in partnership with the Division of Waste Management’s Superfund section, Cherry Point Marine Corps Base received two Secretary of the Navy Awards. The first award is for Environmental Restoration; the second award is the Environmental Quality Award for Industrial Installations.

Lieutenant Junior Grade, Dale McFarland, Supervisory Environmental Engineer of the Restoration and Recycling division heads up the program at Cherry Point. “We are proud of the accomplishments that these awards represent. The awards demonstrate the strength of MCAS Cherry Point's environmental programs and reflect the positive environmental values within the U.S. Marine Corps and the Department of the Navy. I believe that the strength of our program is founded in the outstanding teamwork and cooperation that exists both within our organization and between our program managers and the regulatory agency representatives with whom they interact. This teamwork and cooperation breeds an atmosphere of trust that allows decisions to be made quickly at the lowest possible level.
